Job Description

The Outreach Research Assistant is an essential member of the small team that promotes Benaroya Research Institute studies to patients, healthcare providers, and community groups, and that recruits participants for clinical trials and registries. The primary focus is type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, although the team will be asked to promote research participation for other immune system diseases. The person in this role has daily interaction with individuals and healthcare providers via phone calls, emails, and virtual and in-person meetings; and has strong writing and in-person communication skills. A background or interest in medical science is helpful to understand studies and describe them in lay language to potential participants and healthcare providers and in small group presentations.

 

The ideal person for this role is a self-starter with strong organizational skills who can prioritize tasks while working under deadlines. You must be able to work some evenings and weekends, and travel occasionally. Finally, you must be passionate about research that aims to improve the lives of people living with type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.

 

This is not a lab-based position.

  • Daily response to inquiries from patients, their family members, and healthcare providers via telephone and email
  • Plan and support research screening events throughout the Pacific Northwest, at diabetes camps, JDRF walks, endocrinology clinics, and other venues
  • Prep blood draw supplies and engage phlebotomists for participant screening events, attend events and manage the queue for blood draws, transport and process blood samples in the lab
  • Register BRI team for diabetes conferences and events, track event registration, and periodically staff exhibitor tables at events
  • Promote T1D research studies to patients and providers via email and print mailings. Use a digital email platform to manage and curate email lists
  • Closely track interactions with providers, T1D groups, and potential study participants using spreadsheets and databases
  • Help create and distribute print and digital communications, including newsletters, brochures, social media posts and web pages
  • General administrative tasks to support Outreach Supervisor and department goals
  • Must maintain subject and document confidentiality at all times, understand and comply with appropriate protocols and regulations

 

  Duties Include:

  • Daily administrative tasks such as answering emails and phone calls
  • Tracking outreach activities and recruitment numbers
  • Maintaining inventory of recruitment materials and blood draw supplies
  • Planning outreach events and projects
  • High school diploma is required
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree is strongly preferred
  • Can articulate a basic definition of T1D and quickly learn about autoimmune diseases
  • Passionate about research and can explain scientific concepts to a lay audience
  • Strong listening and interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and ability to interact with people from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Comfortable with public speaking to small groups
  • Conscientious attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and on a team
  • Demonstrated graphic design, writing, and editing skills preferred
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including eight to ten evenings and, occasionally, weekends. Must be available for overnight travel in the Pacific Northwest, approximately three to four times per year.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license and proof of insurance to travel either with personal vehicle or BRI van, preferred

$20.00 to $27.74 per hour
