Rang Healthcare is seeking a travel Medical Technologist for a travel job in Cortez, Colorado.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of an Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Science.
  • 1-3 years Medical Laboratory Technician experience preferred.
  • National certification ASCP or AMT or eligible.
  • Current certification in BLS CPR.

2. ROLE PURPOSE:

Responsible for performing and observing laboratory tests on patient specimens and correctly recording all results. Uses and maintains all laboratory equipment correctly. Perform all testing following all policies and procedures approved by the Laboratory Medical Director, including all safety regulations.

 

3. SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL ROLE FUNCTIONS:

· Responsible for maintaining and using various equipment in the Clinical Laboratory; safely and correctly.

· Responsible for accurately timely performing patient testing and reporting of results as qualified by education and experience in departments listed below.

  • Chemistry
    • Hematology / Coagulation
    • Blood banking
    • Urinalysis
      • Responsible for using and maintaining various equipment in Urinalysis according to policy.
      • Performs microscopic evaluation of urine sediment, applying knowledge of normal and abnormal structures, and refers specimens with abnormal structures to pathologist.
    • Serology
      • Responsible for performing serological procedures according to written procedures.
    • Microbiology

§ Responsible for maintaining and using instrumentation in the Clinical Chemistry Laboratory safely and correctly.

§ Responsible for performing special chemistry tests as needed.

§ Responsible for performing procedures to count and identify blood cells, coagulation studies and specialized hematologic procedures.

§ Uses and maintains all Clinical Laboratory equipment including blood cell analyzer, staining unit, diluters and coagulation instruments. Uses the equipment safely and correctly.

§ Performs peripheral blood smear white blood cell differentials and evaluates red cell morphology, applying the knowledge of normal and abnormal cell morphology and refers abnormal findings according to policy, to pathologist.

§ Performs manual cell counts and cell differentials on body fluids according to policy, referring all slides to pathologist.

§ Maintains the inventory of the Blood Bank, orders blood/blood components as needed, maintains blood product disposition log.

§ Responsible for inspecting stored blood for signs of spoilage, discards expired/spoiled blood.

§ Verifies blood group of donor or patient following policy and procedure.

§ Performs all antibody screening and identification and cross matching procedures required in the administration of blood/blood components.

§ Responsible for identifying the antibodies in donors or patient’s blood that could react adversely during transfusion.

§ Responsible for maintaining accurate records of all transactions occurring during all process associated with blood and blood products, including but not limited to receiving blood and blood products, cross matching blood, issuing blood and blood products, and look back events requested by Blood Service, according to policy.

§ Keeps accurate Clinical Laboratory data for statistics and billing.

§ Responsible for all maintenance procedures associated with blood bank equipment (centrifuges, Microscopes, plasma thawer), refrigerators, and freezers, as described in policies.

§ Responsible for inoculating, cultivating, classifying and identifying microorganisms found in body fluids, exudates, skin scrapings, autopsy and surgical specimens.

§ Prepares and interprets gram stains and preparations of fungus.

§ Responsible for observing material derived from cultures and identifying the type of bacterial colonies found.

§ Discusses abnormal results and difficult analysis with pathologist.

§ Documents all test results on the work log and in the computer system.

§ Performs quality control checks, maintains instruments records results.

§ Documents correct patient and testing information for billing.

· Performs quality control procedures per policy and maintains records on these checks in all departments.

· Responsible for instrument maintenance including documentation of performance in all departments.

· Responsible for troubleshooting all equipment or processes and documentation of all troubleshooting events.

· Responsible for participating in the laboratory Quality Management Program.

· Responsible for documenting correct information for billing purposes.

· Receives and logs patient specimens: urine, blood, spinal fluid, body fluid, etc.

· Responsible for preparing all specimens for testing in this lab and in a reference lab, including centrifugation, preservation/fixing and storage.

· Responsible for appropriate handling of all reagent systems including all safety precautions in all departments.

· Follows standard precautions at all times.

· Using age specific techniques, performs phlebotomy according to specimen collection procedures including using the correct collection containers.

· Notifies patient care unit and/or physician of all critical test values.

· Records all test results in logbooks, quality control records and in the computer system as appropriate per policy. Performs results calculation as required by procedures.

· Always verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the proper patient and for the indicated test procedure.

· Demonstrates knowledge of new testing methods, products and instrumentation; remains informed on all current technologies.

· Initiates the meeting of responsibilities without prompting.

· Demonstrates the values of team concept on a consistent basis.

· Interacts professionally with all department members, physician’s staff, administration and the Director of Clinical Laboratory and Pathology.

· Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

· Stocks and orders supplies when needed for all departments.

 

Level of Supervision

· During the orientation period, employee will be directly supervised in all activities in the laboratory. Once deemed competent for specific procedures or to run a department by demonstrating required skills and knowledge as outlined by the applicable orientation checklist, direct supervision is not required for specimen processing, test performance or result reporting, and supervisor review is not required to report patient test results. All abnormal results are review by director or supervisor in a timely manner.

 

4. MINIMUM ROLE REQUIREMENTS:
