Job Description

Summary: Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation of light equipment related to street lighting, sign, and signal maintenance with routing maintenance responsibilities for assigned equipment. Supervision Received: Director of Public Works, Maintenance Superintendent, Street Lights Foreman, Traffic Maintenance Technician II Supervision Exercised: None FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Essential Job Functions Operates aerial bucket trucks for maintenance on street lighting or traffic signals. Operates a variety of manually operated auxiliary equipment. Performs routine maintenance and repair of street signs, traffic signals, signal controllers, and streetlights. Install and maintain signs, delineators, guardrails, safety appurtenances, and pavement markings. Interpret the Manual on Uniform Control Devices (MUTCD) specifications to properly install and maintain traffic control devices. Trains less experienced personnel in the operation of related light equipment. Locates underground cables. Assist with Striping and other pavement marking operations. Maintain lift truck checklist and train personnel on its usage. Must be on call occasionally on weekends or after hours. Performs related work as required. Performs other reasonably related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor and other management as required. Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures. The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion. Peripheral Job Duties Put up holiday decorations and lights. Hang banners. Serve on committees. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of the principles of operation and servicing of trucks and related automotive equipment. Knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations applying to equipment operation. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions in the operation of trucks and other automotive equipment. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to learn the geography of the city and assigned routes. Ability to perform heavy physical work, often under adverse weather conditions. Skill in the operation of trucks and other automotive equipment. Working knowledge or ability to learn the operation of traffic signals and signal controllers. Working knowledge or ability to learn MUTCD and National Electric Code. Education High school graduate or equivalent. Experience One year of experience demonstrating technical and mechanical abilities. Necessary Special Requirement Valid North Dakota commercial driver’s license; insurable under the City’s motor vehicle insurance policy. Must have or be able to obtain a Traffic Signal Technician Certification from IMSA or ATSSA. Position is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and is subject to controlled substance requirements at all times when on duty. Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; sit; and climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds and regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outdoor weather conditions and is exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts in high, precarious places; in the traffic area; and in wet, humid conditions. The employee occasionally works in extreme cold and heat; is subject to vibration; is exposed to fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals.
