Job Description

 

The Medical Laboratory Assistant will perform a variety of laboratory work to include collection, processing, testing and delivery of blood, urine and body fluid swabs in a laboratory or clinic location. Duties of the Medical Laboratory Assistant include but are not limited to: 

 

• Perform venipuncture, heel sticks, finger sticks and a variety of rapid laboratory tests. Collect, dispense and deliver specimens to an appropriate location in accordance with laboratory and accrediting agencies.
• Process specimens, such as body fluids, urine and blood, in preparation for laboratory testing.
• Manage communication with a variety of stakeholders, route traffic (people), and manage lab inventory.
• Order requested tests in lab computer system, back-order tests, acquire appropriate ICD-10 codes, assist healthcare providers in ordering appropriate tests, and enter results into computer. 
• Adhere to CAP, CLIA and Joint Commission standards.
• Direct critical values to appropriate providers. Assist providers with finding information regarding tests, locating information for providers, answering questions from providers, nurses, and patients. Perform related tasks as assigned.
• Ability to take call as assigned, weekend and holiday shifts as assigned, and provide assistance at multiple laboratory locations as staffing requires. 

Work Experience

Required Qualifications  

• Requires high school diploma or equivalent. 
• Requires six or more months laboratory experience in one of the following areas; phlebotomy, processing specimens, laboratory aid or ordering specimens in the computer. Experience may be waived if the individual has completed a formal healthcare training program (to include but not limited to phlebotomy or medical laboratory assistant program). 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Prefer an associate degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory science.
• Possession of a valid Missouri Driver’s license is preferred.
