DEPARTMENT: DEPARTMENT OF PARKS REPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF BUILDINGS AND RECREATION BUILDINGS MANAGEMENT

POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY:
Responsible for skilled electrical work performed at the journeyman
level in the Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management. Responsible for the application of repairing high and low voltage electrical lighting, signal, communication, power circuits, equipment, appliances and fixtures in municipal buildings. Work is performed under general supervision in accordance with electrical codes and standard trade practices with inspection during process and completion. Work instructions may be oral or written and are accompanied by diagrams or drawings when necessary. Supervision is exercised over assigned helpers.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Works from prints, drawings, specifications, schedules, written and verbal orders and instructions. Uses a variety of testing equipment, including ammeter, ohmmeter, voltmeter, testing lamp or growler to isolate defects in wiring, motors and other electrical equipment. Inspects and tests such elements as distribution panels, controls, circuit fixtures and motors to locate faults such as blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections and worn motor brushes.
  • Installs, tests, alters, repairs and maintains electrical circuits, equipment, fixtures and appliances such as wiring systems, timers, alarms, bells, hoists, heaters, lights, motors, generators, transformers, communication systems, switch boards, fuse boxes, storage batteries, clock systems and fans.
  • Investigates and repairs electrical power distribution equipment and systems. Fastens fixtures, switches and outlet boxes in position. Runs wire through conduit to connect to circuit. Assembles, installs, connects components of switch boards or distribution panels. Mounts motors, transformers, fixtures and other equipment into position. Completes circuits.
  • Replaces faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators and other elements. Isolates, cuts out and replaces defective wiring. Splices broken wires, dismantles electrical machinery, disconnects wiring, replaces and repairs defective mechanical parts such as gears, bushings, bearings and electrical parts such as brushes, armatures, commutators, and transformers. Checks clearances and restores connections.

  • Performs other duties involved in general and preventive maintenance and repair work such as, but not limited to: inspects and tests electrical systems for deficiencies, including conversation of energy, lighting, motors, fans, fuses and breaker boxes, etc.
  • Detects and reports defective and unsafe equipment/material as well as unusual situations to supervisor. Observes and obeys all safety rules, practices and procedures. Wears and employs all required safety equipment and devices. Maintains work area in a neat and orderly manner.
  • Supervises an assigned helper, engaged in semiskilled and manual tasks related to the trade.
  • Performs other similar or related duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Considerable knowledge of standard practices, materials, tools, equipment, processes and techniques of the electrical trade.
  • Working knowledge of municipal and national electrical codes and state regulations.
  • Ability to work from written and oral instructions, diagrams and drawings.
  • Ability to supervise the work of an assigned helper.
  • Ability to diagnose and correct causes of failure of electrical equipment.
  • Skill in the use of the tools, equipment, and materials of the trade.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or equivalent and completion of a formal apprenticeship in the electrical trade.
  • Minimum of three years of experience as a journeyman electrician.

SPECIAL NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possession of a journeyman or master electrician’s license.

TECHNOLOGY, EQUIPMENT, SYSTEMS, AND TOOLS: Requires basic computer skills and knowledge of
appropriate electrician’s tools.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is mostly performed in a field environment. Fieldwork, performed in buildings under construction or with old deteriorated or dire-damaged electrical installations, is potentially hazardous. Regular and predictable attendance is a requirement.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND POTENTIAL HAZARDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear; reach with hands and arms; stoop and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
