Degree in American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting, certified ASL Interpreter credentials, and 1+ year of experience as an ASL Interpreter in educational settings. Applicants who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.

Provide specialized sign language interpreting services for an 8th-grade student in a middle school behavioral classroom setting. This role focuses on supporting the student during instructional periods, facilitating effective communication between the student and educators to enhance learning outcomes.

Location: Houston, TX
Assignment Type: Contract, Current School Year through July 3, 2026
Hours: Approximately 32.5 hours per week (about 6.5 hours per day excluding lunch, arrival, and dismissal)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation during all instructional times to support the students communication needs
  • Collaborate with teachers and support staff to ensure accurate and effective communication in the classroom
  • Adapt interpreting methods to accommodate the students use of cochlear implants, hearing aids, and assistive listening devices
  • Maintain professionalism and confidentiality while working closely with a student who identifies as hearing but uses non-intelligible vocalizations
  • Participate in communication regarding compensatory services over the current school year and into summer

Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must hold at least one of the four nationally recognized Sign Language Interpreter certifications
  • Experience working with middle school students, particularly those with behavioral and communication challenges
  • Familiarity with assistive listening and hearing devices such as cochlear implants and ALD systems
  • Ability to interpret in an educational setting with sensitivity to the unique needs of students transitioning from residential programs
